Idomeneo was composed between 1780 and 1781 to a libretto by G. Varesco. Mozart was only twenty-five years old. Its complex genesis hides a creative ordeal, documented in around forty letters that Wolfgang and his father exchanged, in which they discussed how to resolve the dramatic problems. The opera made a great impression at its premiere at the court in Munich.
