Dialogues des Carmélites gives the sense of theatre as a place for the manifestation of the inner world, in particular, the female inner world, and the music builds up through reflection on single spiritual events rather than on action.

The booklet provides background information to the opera, and describes and examines its musical value. It recounts Poulenc’s membership of the “Group of Six” and the enormous originality of the Parisian artistic scene of the time, dominated as it was by the figure of Picasso.
